Living in Florida offers a range of financial, educational, recreational, retirement, and lifestyle benefits. These include significant tax advantages, extensive outdoor activities, and diverse communities.
Financial Benefits
Florida has one of the most favorable tax structures in the U.S. for individuals and businesses.
No State Income Tax: Florida is one of a few states that does not have a personal state income tax. This means residents keep more of their wages, salary, and self-employment earnings.
No Tax on Retirement Income: This lack of state income tax also applies to all forms of retirement income. This includes Social Security benefits, pension payouts, 401(k) and IRA withdrawals, and investment income.
Homestead Exemption: Homeowners who make Florida their permanent residence may be eligible for a property tax exemption. This exemption can be up to $50,000 on their primary residence. It reduces the taxable value.
"Save Our Homes" Cap: This law limits annual increases in the assessed value of homesteaded properties to 3%. It also considers the change in the Consumer Price Index, whichever is less. This provides long-term property tax stability.
No Estate or Inheritance Tax: Florida does not impose a state estate or inheritance tax. This allows residents to pass more wealth and assets to their heirs.
Sales Tax Exemptions: Most groceries, prescription and nonprescription drugs, and certain medical items are exempt from sales tax. The state also offers various "tax holidays" throughout the year (e.g., back-to-school, hurricane preparedness) where sales tax is waived on qualifying items.
